Marcel Souffrant is a junior Park Scholar from Charlotte, NC, majoring in Biology and minoring in French at North Carolina State University.  His interest in health and how it is administered in underrepresented communities has led to his participation in several experiences on and off campus.  After completion of his freshman year, Marcel had the opportunity to spend five weeks in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the birthplace of his father.  During his time in Haiti, he worked alongside several physicians at The Haitian Community Hospital of Petion-Ville, and was able to explore the administration of health in a developing country.  This opportunity to learn from the physicians has stuck with him to this day, an experience he is grateful for.

Following his graduation from North Carolina State University, Marcel intends to enroll in medical school where he will continue to study towards his passion of providing healthcare.  He has spent some time during his summers shadowing at Mid Carolina Cardiology in Monroe, NC and Carolina Pulmonary Physicians in Rock Hill, SC, while working at Secure EDI, a Charlotte based healthcare technology company.  Marcel’s participation in these enrichment opportunities has been instrumental in his commitment to becoming a practicing physician.

Through the influence of his parents, with his mother a clinical psychologist, and his father a professor of philosophy, Marcel also has strong interests in the humanities.  Their impact has led to his desire to approach health from a holistic stand-point.  My Health Impact Network speaks about health in all aspects, spiking Marcel’s excitement for the work they can do together.
